Testing the Spirits: Knowing God’s Will Through Scripture

Many who claim to follow Jesus assert they “hear God” or “feel the Holy Spirit” guiding them through personal experiences, visions, or inner promptings. While sincerity is commendable, the New Testament instructs believers to test such claims against the inspired Word of God, which alone reveals His will. The Bible warns that not every spirit is from God (1John 4:1), and it provides the sole standard for discerning truth. Today, no one receives divine revelation apart from Scripture, and we must lovingly but firmly guide others to this truth.

The New Testament teaches that God’s revelation was completed through the apostles and prophets. John 20:30-31 declares that the recorded signs of Jesus are sufficient for belief and life in His name. Similarly, 2Timothy 3:16-17 affirms that Scripture is “by inspiration of God” and equips believers for every good work, leaving no need for additional revelation. The apostles, uniquely inspired by the Holy Spirit (John 16:13; Acts 2:4), delivered the faith “once delivered unto the saints” (Jude 3). This completed revelation warns against adding to or subtracting from God’s Word (Revelation 22:18-19).

Claims of hearing God apart from Scripture often lead to confusion, as seen in the conflicting beliefs among denominations. The Bible cautions against deceptive spirits and false prophets (2Corinthians 11:13-15; 1Timothy 4:1). Jesus Himself warned of false christs and prophets who would mislead many (Matthew 24:24). If individuals claim divine guidance that contradicts Scripture or leads to opposing doctrines, such “spirits” fail the test of 1John 4:2-3, which demands alignment with the apostolic testimony about Christ.

The Holy Spirit’s work today is not to provide new revelations but to illuminate the written Word. Jesus promised the Holy Spirit would guide the apostles into all truth (John 16:13), a process fulfilled in the New Testament’s completion. Ephesians 3:3-5 reveals that God’s mystery was made known through apostolic writings, not ongoing personal revelations. Peter underscores that Scripture, inspired by the Spirit, surpasses even eyewitness experiences (2Peter 1:16-21). Thus, any claim of divine communication must be measured against the Bible’s unchanging standard.

To those who feel they “hear God,” we respond with compassion but clarity: God has spoken fully through His Word. Hebrews 1:1-2 contrasts God’s past revelations with His final word in Christ, recorded in Scripture.

Personal feelings, while powerful, are subjective and fallible (Jeremiah 17:9). The Bereans were commended for testing even Paul’s teachings against Scripture (Acts 17:11). We must do the same, trusting that the Bible alone is sufficient to guide us into God’s will (Psalm 119:105). In a world of competing voices, Christians must anchor their faith in the inspired, complete Word of God. By testing every spirit against Scripture, we guard against deception and find the true path to knowing God.

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” (Jeremiah 17:9)

The Amazing Power of God’s Word

You know, the Word of God is like a hidden gem for all of us believers. It’s more than just pages filled with text; it’s our go-to guide, a wellspring of truth, and an incredible tool for our spiritual journey. Seriously, if you really pay attention to its teachings, you’ll uncover so many benefits! When we dig into the scriptures, we see how God shows us His will, gives us solid truth, helps us stand strong in our faith, and lights up our paths. How cool is that?

Knowing the Will of the Lord (Ephesians 5:17)

Ephesians 5:17 exhorts, “Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.” In a world clouded by confusion, the Bible unveils God’s will for humanity. It reveals His universal desires, such as salvation for all (2 Peter 3:9, KJV: “not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance”) and holy living (1 Thessalonians 4:3). By meditating on Scripture, as Psalm 119:11 (KJV) states, “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee,” believers align their lives with God’s purposes. The Word acts as a divine compass, guiding us to avoid folly and live according to His eternal plan.

Objective Truth in a Deceptive World (John 17:17)

In John 17:17, Jesus prays, “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” The Bible stands as the unchanging standard of truth in an age of shifting values. As 2 Timothy 3:16 (KJV) declares, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God,” it is a reliable foundation for faith and practice. This truth sanctifies believers, setting them apart for God’s service by renewing their minds (Romans 12:2). It also guards against deception, as Jesus used Scripture to defeat Satan’s lies (Matthew 4:4-10). In a world prone to error, the Word anchors us in divine truth, enabling us to live with understanding.

A Ready Answer for Our Faith (1 Peter 3:15)

The Word equips believers to share their hope in Christ. 1 Peter 3:15 instructs, “Be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear.” Scripture strengthens our faith (Romans 10:17, KJV: “faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God”) and prepares us to share the gospel with humility and reverence. Whether answering skeptics or encouraging seekers, the Bible provides the foundation for our testimony, ensuring our words reflect God’s truth and grace (Colossians 4:6).

Direction for Our Lives (Jeremiah 10:23; Psalm 119:105)

Jeremiah 10:23 acknowledges, “The way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.” Paired with Psalm 119:105, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path,” this reveals the Bible’s role as a guide. Human wisdom falters (Proverbs 16:9), but Scripture illuminates both immediate decisions and long-term goals. Whether facing trials or choices, the Word offers wisdom (Joshua 1:8) and warnings (Proverbs 14:12). By following it, believers walk confidently in God’s purposes.

The Word is “quick, and powerful” (Hebrews 4:12, KJV), transforming hearts, comforting in affliction (Psalm 119:92), and fostering intimacy with God (John 15:7). It equips us for every good work (2 Timothy 3:17), enabling us to live with purpose, anchored in the truth and guidance of God’s Word.

The DOOR was shut, Matthew 25:10

In Matthew 25:10, within the parable of the ten virgins, Jesus declares, “And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut.” This vivid imagery underscores a sobering truth: opportunities for salvation and readiness have limits. The shutting of the door represents finality, a point of no return in our spiritual journey. How, then, is this door shut in practical application? Scripture reveals four key ways that the door becomes shut.

First, death is a closed door. Hebrews 9:27 states, “It is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment.” Life is the season for repentance and faith, but death ends that opportunity, once life ends, the opportunity for repentance ceases. The parable’s foolish virgins, unprepared when the bridegroom arrived, mirror those who delay repentance, assuming time remains. Death seals our choices, shutting the door to further chances to accept God’s grace by obeying the gospel. This urges us to live ready, embracing salvation now, as tomorrow is not promised (2 Corinthians 6:2). Like the foolish virgins who scrambled too late to prepare, those who postpone turning to Christ risk facing eternity unprepared. This reality presses us to act now, (by obeying the gospel through baptism by through faith, Colossians 2:11-12) because no one knows their final hour (James 4:14). Death’s finality demands we live ready.

Second, obstinance toward the Holy Spirit shuts the door. Acts 7:51 warns against resisting the Spirit, who convicts us of sin and guides us to truth (John 16:8). Rejecting the revealed Word (God’s plan for salvation through Christ and call to godliness) hardens the heart. Like Pharaoh, who ignored God’s signs (Exodus 8:15), persistent refusal to heed Scripture’s clear path (John 3:16; Acts 2:38) closes the door to grace. Jesus warned of blasphemy against the Spirit as an unforgivable sin (Matthew 12:31-32), reflecting a willful, persistent refusal to accept God’s way. The foolish virgins’ lack of oil mirrors this neglect, choosing self-reliance over surrender. The foolish virgins’ neglect of oil symbolizes this willful unpreparedness, choosing self over surrender to God’s Spirit. To keep the door open, we must heed the Spirit’s prompting today through the revealed word in scripture.

Third, refusing to open the door Jesus knocks upon seals our exclusion. Revelation 3:20 declares, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in.” Salvation is a personal choice; Jesus invites, but we must respond. Ignoring His call (through apathy, pride, or worldly distractions) leaves us outside the feast, as the virgins discovered. Scripture laments those who reject God’s invitation (Luke 14:24), underscoring that an unopened heart shuts the door to eternal life. There are several examples of those who turned away from Jesus. The Rich Young Ruler (Matthew 19:16-22). Some of Jesus’ Disciples (John 6:60-66). Answering Jesus now ensures entry.

Fourth, Christ’s return will shut the door finally for all. Matthew 25:31-46 describes the judgment day, when Christ separates the ready from the unprepared. The bridegroom’s arrival in the parable foreshadows this moment, when “the Son of Man comes” unexpectedly (Matthew 24:44). No further chances remain; every soul will account for their faith and deeds (2 Corinthians 5:10). As God shut the ark’s door before the flood (Genesis 7:16), Christ’s return will close salvation’s offer, finalizing destinies. On that day, “But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.” (2Peter 3:10). This compels us to live in readiness, clothed in Christ (Galatians 3:27), faith and obedience.

Matthew 25:10 is a call to vigilance. Death’s certainty, the Spirit’s voice, Jesus’ knock, and Christ’s return all remind us: the door is open now, but not forever. Like the wise virgins, we must prepare (embracing salvation, yielding to God’s Spirit, welcoming Christ, and awaiting His return). Let us act before the door is shut, securing our place at the eternal feast.

GOD is the Genesis, Owner, & Definer

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1).

This statement is a foundational truth that establishes God’s existence and His unparalleled power. As Creator, God brought everything into being out of nothing, speaking life and order into the void. The intricate design of the universe, from the vast galaxies to the smallest particles, testifies to His wisdom and omnipotence. This truth is said also of Jesus, “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him” (Col 1:16). But some do not recognize the Creator, “Who is the LORD, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? I know not the LORD…” (Exo 5:2_

Everything that exists owes its existence to Him. This includes not only the physical universe but also the moral and spiritual dimensions of life. Since He is the source of all life, He possesses an inherent authority over His creation.

Because God is the Creator, He is also the Owner of all that He has made. Psalm 24:1-2 proclaims, “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; for he founded it on the seas and established it on the waters.” Ownership implies a deep and comprehensive authority. Just as an artist has rights over their masterpiece, God has the ultimate right and claim over His creation.

God’s ownership extends to every aspect of our lives. Our talents, resources, and even our very breath belong to Him. This perspective shifts our focus from self-centered living to a life that honors and glorifies Him. But some would not honor Him, “Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful” (Rom 1:21a).

Flowing from this truth that God is Creator and Owner, He possesses the sole right to define and decide what is right, just, and necessary for salvation. This divine prerogative is evident throughout Scripture. In Isaiah 45:9, the prophet declares, “Woe to those who quarrel with their Maker… Does the clay say to the potter, ‘What are you making?’” This rhetorical question highlights the absurdity of creation questioning its Creator.

God’s authority encompasses defining moral and ethical standards. In a world rife with moral relativism, God’s Word stands as the absolute standard. His laws and commandments, revealed through Scripture, are not arbitrary rules but reflections of His holy and righteous character.

Moreover, God’s authority extends to the realm of salvation. Throughout the Bible, He has clearly delineated the path to reconciliation with Him. The New Testament emphasizes that salvation is through Jesus Christ alone. In John 14:6, Jesus asserts, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” This exclusivity underscores God’s right to determine the means by which humanity can be saved. But some say that salvation can be found another way, “And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked” (Acts 17:32). For some, the gospel is foolishness, (1Cor 1:18).

Understanding God as the ultimate authority challenges us to submit to His will and to obey the gospel (Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38). We trust His wisdom, even when it contradicts our limited understanding or societal norms.

Sinning against the Holy Spirit

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom” (Colossians 3:16).

The concept of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit has long intrigued and, at times, perplexed believers. In Mark 3:29, Jesus warns about an unforgiveable sin called blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. Some have said that it’s saying a certain phrase. That view doesn’t fit with the rest of the scriptures on this matter.

It makes sense that this blasphemy involves disobeying the written word of God and remaining unrepentant unto death. It is the Holy Spirit that reveals God’s will to man. This is true for the Old and the New Testaments.

For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost

(2Pet 1:21; Acts 1:16; Heb 9:8; 2Tim 3:16-17).

To better understand this ultimate sin, let’s explore the many ways we sin against the Holy Spirit as revealed in the written word.

Ephesians 4:30 implores believers not to grieve the Holy Spirit. Sorrowing the Spirit occurs when we engage in actions contrary to God’s commands. Look at what Isaiah wrote; “But they rebelled, and vexed his holy Spirit: therefore he was turned to be their enemy, and he fought against them” (Isaiah 63:10). This grief is a result of our disobedience and disregard for His word. When we knowingly choose sin over righteousness, we grieve the Spirit.

In 1 Thessalonians 5:19, we are warned not to quench the Spirit. The Holy Spirit is often symbolized as a flame or fire (Acts 2:3-4). To quench the Spirit is to suppress His influence in our lives through the word. When we ignore His revealed word, or neglect the pursuit of spiritual growth, we extinguish the flame of the Spirit that should cause a burning within us. “Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?” (cf. Luke 24:32).

Acts 5:1-11 recounts the tragic tale of Ananias and Sapphira, who lied to God the Holy Spirit. Deception never draws us closer to God. They chose to lie to be seen as being more generous than they were. We can fake out men, but we’ll never pull the wool over the all-seeing eyes of God.

In Acts 7:51, Stephen accuses the religious leaders of resisting the Holy Spirit. Resistance involves actively opposing the Spirit’s instructions in the revealed word. When we resist the Holy Spirit, we interfere with the saving power of the Gospel (Romans 1:16).

The account of Simon the sorcerer in Acts 8:17-24 illustrates the danger of insulting the Holy Spirit. Simon sought to purchase the power of the Holy Spirit, demonstrating a profound misunderstanding of the Spirit’s purpose. This sin lies in attempting to commercialize the divine. When we seek to use the Word for personal gain, we insult His sovereignty and it seeks to take advantage (cf. 2Pet 2:3).

Mark 3:22-30 warns against turning away from the Holy Spirit in an unrepentant state. Turning away involves a deliberate rejection of the Spirit’s convicting work and a refusal to acknowledge our need for repentance. If this form of rebellion continues until death, it closes the door to God’s mercy and forgiveness. Unrepentance signifies a hardened heart that resists the transformative power of the Gospel leading to eternal death.

John 20:30 And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: 31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

The Book of Acts, a book of conversions

Conversions in the Book of Acts

A mistake that is made in learning what we must do to be saved is by consulting only the books written to the saved without looking at what else is said in Scripture.

For example, many will quote the book to the Roman Christians; (Rom 10:9) without considering what Paul taught the Romans when he dwelt there for two whole years. [Acts 16:30]

They will quote the book written to the Ephesian Christians; (Eph 2:8-9) without considering what Paul taught the Ephesians [Acts 19:1-5].

These two examples show us why we must look into the book of Acts to see what lost people did. Those who heard the gospel and either obeyed it or rejected it. This is why it could be called the book of Conversions.

Let’s examine just a few of the conversions in this book to see how they responded to the preaching of the Gospel as commanded by Christ Jesus. [Mat 28:18-20]

Jews at PENTECOST [2:14-47] This represents the first gospel sermon after the DBR of Christ. The beginning of the church that Jesus promised to build [Mat 16:18] and the first example of those being saved. “Be saved from this perverse generation.” What happened? They HEARD the gospel [22-36]. They believed [37]. It must be inferred that they CONFESSED Jesus as the Christ the Son of God [Mt 10:32]. They were told to ‘REPENT & be baptized’ [38]. They were BAPTIZED into Christ [41] and 3,000 were added to the church. Then we see them ‘CONTINUING steadfastly in the Apostles Doctrine, which is from Christ [42; cr. John 14:26; 15:26; 16:13; 1Cor 14:37].

THE ETHIOPIAN EUNUCH [8:26-39] This man is reading from Isaiah and struggling with its meaning. Philip approaches him and is invited by the Eunuch to explain the passage. We then are told, “Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning at this Scripture, preached Jesus to him.” What Happened? He HEARD the gospel of Jesus [35]. He BELIEVED [36-37] It is inferred that he REPENTED [Luke 13:3; Acts 17:30]. He CONFESSES that Jesus is the Christ [37]. He is BAPTIZED with water, by immersion, into Christ [38-39 cr. Rom 6:3-4; Gal 3:27]. He went away REJOICING [39].

The Apostle PAUL (Saul of Tarsus) [9:1-18; 22:6-16; 26:12-19]. While on his way to persecute the church of Christ, Saul saw Jesus risen from the dead. He HEARD & BELIEVED [9:5-6]. He was REPENTANT [9-11]. He CONFESSED [5-6]. He was BAPTIZED [18]. When retelling of this event, he states that baptism was the moment his sins were washed away [22:16].

CORNELIUS [10:1-11:18] This story tells of the first Gentile conversion. We must read chapters 10 & 11 to get the full picture. They were told to HEAR and they HEARD [6, 22, 33-43; 11:14]. It is inferred that they REPENTED & CONFESSED [Luke 13:3; Act 17:30; Mat 10:32]. They were BAPTIZED in water [47]. They received remission of sins [43].

Chapter 11:1-18 contains the retelling of this event by Peter to those of the circumcision who contended with him about being with gentiles. This retelling is necessary to show that God had made the same gospel plan of salvation available to every nation [Mat 28:18-20]. Up to this point, the preaching had been only to the Jews. “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.” [Rom 1:16] The “Baptism of the Holy Spirit” only occurred twice, here and at Pentecost. It was done to show God’s approval at the beginning.

The same Gospel requires all after Pentecost to HEAR, BELIEVE, REPENT, CONFESS, be BAPTIZED in water & have FAITHFULNESS. God shows no partiality, no bigotry. The Gospel is for all and all must obey the Gospel in the same way. God is no respecter of persons.
