What’s at Stake if We Miss the Gospel?

Missing the gospel isn’t just a minor misstep, it’s a choice with eternal consequences. The New Testament lays out what’s on the line when we turn away from God’s call to follow Jesus. It’s not about fear-mongering or guilt-tripping anyone; it’s about understanding the weight of our decisions. What’s really at risk for missing out on the Gospel of Christ?

First, salvation itself hangs in the balance. Hebrews 5:8 tells us Jesus learned obedience through suffering, becoming the source of eternal salvation for those who obey Him. Disobeying the gospel means rejecting the only path to being made right with God. Look at John 3:36 “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.” Acts 4:12 hammers it home: there’s no other name under heaven by which we can be saved. And Romans 10:16 ties belief and obedience together, showing that refusing to obey the gospel is like shutting the door on God’s grace. Salvation isn’t a free pass; it’s a response to Jesus’ sacrifice.

Next, there’s treasure in heaven. Matthew 6:19-20 urges us to store up treasures in heaven, not on earth, where moth and rust destroy. Disobeying the gospel means chasing fleeting, earthly rewards instead of eternal ones. Colossians 3:2 pushes us to set our minds on things above, not earthly things. And 1 Timothy 6:17 encourages us not to place our trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy. Ignoring the Gospel risks a life spent on what fades away.

Then there’s the danger of apostasy; falling away from faith. Galatians 4:11 shows Paul’s fear that his work among the Galatians might be in vain if they turn from the gospel. Hebrews 6:4-6 warns of the impossibility of renewing repentance in those who fall away after receiving the truth. 2 Peter 2:20-21 paints a grim picture of those who know Jesus but return to the world, saying it’s worse than never knowing at all. And 1Timothy 4:1 speaks of some abandoning faith in later times. Ignoring the gospel can lead to a slow drift or outright rejection of the truth we once held.

Kingdom citizenship is also at stake. Colossians 1:13 says God has rescued us from darkness and brought us into His Son’s kingdom. Disobeying the gospel means missing out on that transfer. Ephesians 2:19 calls believers fellow citizens with God’s people, no longer strangers. Philippians 3:20 declares our citizenship is in heaven, where we await Jesus. And Luke 22:29-30 promises a place in God’s kingdom for those who follow Him. Rejecting the gospel keeps us outside this family, this home God offers.

Finally, eternal life itself is on the line. Matthew 7:13-14 describes the narrow gate leading to life and the wide road to destruction. Disobedience chooses the latter. John 5:28-29 warns that those who’ve done evil face a resurrection to judgment. Romans 6:23 contrasts the wages of sin, death, with the gift of eternal life through Jesus. And 1 John 5:11-12 makes it clear: eternal life is in the Son, and without Him, we don’t have it. Missing the gospel risks an eternity apart from God.

So, what’s at stake? Everything—our salvation, our eternal reward, our steadfastness, our place in God’s kingdom, and life itself. The gospel isn’t just good news; it’s a call to choose wisely, to live for what lasts.

Evidence for our Faith: The Bible’s Answers to Life’s Deepest Questions

Generations of people have wrestled with tough questions: Why are we here? Why is there pain in the world? Is there anything after we die? The Bible, trusted by billions, gives clear and meaningful answers to these deep questions. It’s like a guidebook from God, offering wisdom that makes sense and stands the test of time. It is a book for how to understand and navigate through this world, but also guides us to know how to have eternal life beyond this one. It is the word of God.

“And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works” (2 Timothy 3:15-17).

The Bible declares our purpose. Ecclesiastes 12:13 puts it plainly: “Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.” This means living in a way that puts God first in our lives, rather than chasing our own lusts, desires, and goals. The Bible teaches we were created by God and are made to glorify Him (Genesis 1:26-8; Isaiah 43:7). This provides a clear purpose, a timeless sense of value, and reassurance that we are more than mere animals.

Suffering is real, and the Bible addresses it head on. The story of Job shows a man who faced terrible pain but found God was still with him. Romans 8:28 promises that “God works all things for good for those who love Him.” Pain might come from human mistakes (Genesis 3:16–19) or just life’s challenges, but the Bible never calls it useless. It can shape us, and make us stronger (James 1:2–4). It can also help us to grow closer to God as we recognize our need for His strength (2 Corinthians 12:9-10). Many are hopeless in suffering, but the Bible offers hope that good can come out of suffering for those that love the Lord. The Bible also assures us that suffering is not God messing with us.

The Bible gives a straight answer about life after death. The Bible says, “God loved the world so much that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him and follows Him will not be lost but have eternal life” (John 3:16), and “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved” (Mark 16:16a). The Bible gives us instructions on how to have eternal life with God (e.g. Acts 2:38, Romans 6:17–18). The Bible’s promise of eternal life is backed by Jesus’ resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:20–22), a real event that gives us solid hope for eternity. We can know where we are going and how to get there.

Some people say the Bible’s answers are too rigid for today’s times of enlightenment. Thinkers through the ages have seen how the Bible’s teachings make sense of life’s big questions and remains timeless. It does more than just comfort us, it shows us how to live with purpose, face challenges with hope, and prepare for eternity through obedience to God’s Word. Every generation needs the Bible to discover true enlightenment in God’s timeless wisdom.

The Bible gives more than just answers; it shows us the true God who walks with us through life’s ups and downs. By believing in Jesus and obeying the gospel, we find purpose, hope, and the promise of eternal life. In a confusing world, the Bible is a steady guide for life’s biggest questions.

“Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.” (John 6:68)

For the GOSPEL

Paul wrote about why he did the things that he did. 1Corinthians 9:19-23

19 For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more.

20 And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law;

21 To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law.

22 To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.

23 And this I do for the gospel’s sake, that I might be partaker thereof with you.

Look at verse 23 again…

“And this I do for the gospel’s sake, that I might be partaker thereof with you.” (1Cor 9:23)

Paul was the type of guy that flipped all the switches, turned all the knobs, and pressed all the buttons in his evangelism efforts.

NEW YEAR, NEW ME

This got me thinking about my goals for the new year. Instead of the typical goals most of us try to write, I decided to take a Paul type approach. I still have GOALS, but now they’re framed “FOR THE GOSPEL’S SAKE.”

Here is my revised goal list for the GOSPEL’S sake.

GOOD Health so I may have the energy to preach the GOSPEL.

3John 1:2 Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.

OBEDIENCE to Christ so I may not hinder the GOSPEL from my hypocracy.

Mt 23:13 But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!

Love of my SPOUSE, my wife, for the sake of the GOSPEL.

Eph 5:32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church. 33 Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.

My PROSPERITY (financial) goals so that I may have the means to preach the GOSPEL.

3John 1:2 Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.

EXAMINE myself & the Scriptures to be a more effective EVANGELIST for the sake of the GOSPEL.

1Co 9:4 Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.
25 And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.
26 I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air:
27 But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

to LOVE so that all may know I am a disciple of Christ.

John 13:35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

Mat 22:37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38 This is the first and great commandment.
39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

To STAND firm in the faith for the GOSPEL’S Sake.

Your church vs the Lord’s church.

Increase our FAITH

“And the apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith.” (Luke 17:5).

All of us could use a little bit more faith, and if we had the faith of a mustard seed, we could move mountains (cf. Luke 17:6).

The word ‘Faith’ can be confusing. In one place it says, “Where is your faith?” Yet, in another place it says that FAITH was once delivered (cf. Luke 8:25; Jude 3).

In one place it says, “faith cometh by hearing,” and in another it says that faith is a gift of the Holy Spirit.

It’s easy to see how we become confused by this very complex and powerful word. It’s up to us to study and to understand what it is the Lord is conveying through this little word.

Let’s look at faith.

The Greek word translated ‘FAITH’ is; pistis; persuasion, i.e. credence; moral conviction (of religious truth, or the truthfulness of God or a religious teacher), especially reliance upon Christ for salvation; abstractly, constancy in such profession; by extension, the system of religious (Gospel) truth itself: –assurance, belief, believe, faith, fidelity. (W.E. VINES)

That’s the definition of the word, but to fully appreciate FAITH, we need to look into scripture for its use. Would it surprise you to learn that scripture records FAITH in 7 different ways?

FAITH as it is used in the scriptures.

What we usually think when we say “FAITH” is BELIEF. “But without faith it is impossible to please him” (Heb 11:6; cf John 12:42). Consider that James uses belief and faith synonymously, “Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble” (Jas 2:18-19).

Another common way we understand FAITH is with the word TRUST. “And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm” (Matt 8:26). Abraham trusted God when he offered up the son of promise. “By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called: Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure” (Heb 11:17-19; cf. Rom 9:17-20; John 14:1; Luke 7:9).

Here’s where it gets difficult for some. FAITH is also used in conjunction with OBEDIENCE. Paul wrote in Romans, “By whom we have received grace and apostleship, for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name:” “But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith” (Romans 1:5; 16:26).

FAITH is also an objective content called “the faith” that is delivered. “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Rom 10:17). Jude says, “Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints” (Jude 1:3; cf Gal 1:11,23).

FAITH is also used to mean LOYAL. To be faithful is to be loyal. “Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)” (Heb 10:23) “Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life” (Rev 2:10).

Yet another way FAITH is used is seen in one’s strong personal conviction. “Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked” (Eph 6:16). “Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations. For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs” (Rom 14:1-2).

Lastly, FAITH is listed among the 9 spiritual gifts early saints could receive during the writing of the New Testament (1Cor 12:8-9; 13:2; Matt 17:20)

As you can see, FAITH is a very complex word. To disconnect it from its full meaning for one definition is to pervert the word of God.

GO into all the world

A Message for the World.

“And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” (Mark 16:15)

There is a MESSAGE for the world. It’s an important message. Dare I say, it’s a vital message to the survival of the soul? It’s the Gospel.

But who shall take this message to the world? According to the bible, we will, the church. It began with the chosen Apostles, and then was extended to us.

“And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.” (2Tim 2:2)

The Creator of the universe has entrusted us with this vital message. Are we up to the task?

Normal is not up to the task. We’re all familiar with the average man and his hesitancy to perform a task. When given such an assignment, will the regular person say, “Here am I; send me?” No, they will rather ask one or more of these questions:

When should I start?
Where do I go?
Who is the world?
Is that my job?
Do you mean right now?

“As vinegar to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard to them that send him.”

(Prov 10:26)

The Lord wants laborers. “Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.” (Luke 10:2)

We are the laborers, each of us have been ‘hired’ for this important taks. “And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and saith unto them, Why stand ye here all the day idle? They say unto him, Because no man hath hired us. He saith unto them, Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive.” (Matt 20:1-16; cf Matt 25:24-30)

Now back to the command; “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:” (Matt 28:19) Let us GO. The rest of this article we’ll look at the two qualities we need when we GO into all the world.

Firstly, we need ourselves to be changed people. Before we can present the Gospel to anyone, we must first be partakers of that gospel. Without GODLINESS it will be near impossible to convince anyone of the good news. You cannot teach the gospel just through a godly life, but it’s impossible without it.

“Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.” (1Peter 2:12; 3:16)

“That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;” (Phil 2:15)

Many folks have rejected the gospel, the church, and pure religion, simply on the basis of the hypocrisy of its members. Let us GO in all GODLINESS. “But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.” (1Tim 6:11; cf 2Pet 1:1-10)

The second part of this simple command is to be of ONE mind with Christ in all that we do. “Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ;” (Eph 6:5).

Going into the world to preach does not require a vow of poverty nor for us to quit working (cf. Eph 4:28; 2Thess 3:10; 1Tim 5:8). Living godly lives in our work, our home, and our community gives us opportunity to meet folks and to shine our lights. From there we must have ONE mind with Christ, which is to share the life saving Gospel message. “For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost.” (Matt 18:11; Luke 19:10).

We as individuals may not reach them all, but all that we meet may be reached, and if all of us reach then some may be saved. “I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.” (1Cor 9:22b) Go. You need not go very far. “…behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.” (John 4:35)

6 ways how not to RESPOND to the Gospel & 1 right way.

If you’ve done any evangelism at all, and many of you have, you’ll immediately recognize these most common ways folks RESPOND to the Gospel message, especially to the command to be baptized.

However, we need not rely on anecdotal evidence, we can see these same responses in the scriptures.

Following are a list of ways how not to RESPOND to the Gospel of Jesus Christ and ONE way to RESPOND, can you recognize the one?

How do folks RESPOND to the Gospel?

The preachers of the Gospel went far and wide to every type of person. They preached to the elite class and the lower class. They preached when it was in season and when it was out of season. They preached from a mountain top and from a prison. They heard every way one could RESPOND.

RESISTANCE: When Stephen preached the Gospel to the Jewish leaders, he recognized this first one, RESISTANCE.

“Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye.” [Acts 7:51]

ESCAPISM or Ignore it. When Jesus was

“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;”

[2Timothy 4:3]

asked how to inherit eternal life, He told the young ruler what must be done. He didn’t like it, so he turned and walked away. Also, those in John 6 who didn’t like the hard sayings of Jesus. When the sayings of Jesus are too hard for some, they choose rather to ignore it. They escape to other teachers [2Tim 4:3].

“And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions.” [Mark 10:22]

SCOFF at it. Along with RESISTING & IGNORING the Gospel, some go further and mock it. They my also go a step further and SCOFF at the messenger.

“And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked:” [Acts 17:32]

PARTIAL OBEDIENCE: Partial obedience to God is no obedience at all. Unfortunately, far too many stop at faith alone, and fail to consider the whole counsel of God [Acts 20:7]. Jesus’ criticism of the Scribes & Pharisees was with their partial obedience to the Law.

“Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cumin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.” [Matthew 23:23]

OBEDIENCE: This one thing is Resisted, Ignored, Scoffed at etc. The scriptures are so clear, OBEY THE GOSPEL.

“And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;” [Hebrews 5:9]

NEGLECT it. Here’s a sad truth. Some Hear, Believe, Repent, Confess & are Baptized, but then fall from grace through NEGLECT. Failing to be diligent unto the end. We NEGLECT reading, worship, communion, working, or serving.

“How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation;” [Hebrews 2:3]

DELAY: Delay is to Disobey. How sad it is when folks hear the truth but delay obedience until some more convenient time. This is putting trust in a future that has no promise [James 4:14].

“… Felix trembled, and answered, Go thy way for this time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee.”

[Acts 24:25]

REPLACING THE GOSPEL

If you were to ask 100 secular people what the gospel is, you would likely get 100 answers. If you asked 100 religious people you may get 1,000. The reason I say this is because over the last 2,000 years (and particularly the last 100) mankind have been coming up with all sorts of gospels. Which are not other gospels, but a perversion of the one Gospel.

“But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed” [Gal 1:8].

The recent past is nothing new, we can read about men replacing God’s word in the Bible and it was going on long before the 1^st century. Turn in your Bible to 1 Kings 12:26-33 and you’ll see a story of one man changing the worship of God for his own purposes.

“If this people go up to do sacrifice in the house of the LORD at Jerusalem, then shall the heart of this people turn again unto their lord, even unto Rehoboam king of Judah, and they shall kill me,” [v27]

In this story we can identify 5 steps in which Jeroboam was able to pervert the truth of God’s word so that he could have control over the population…

FIRST, he found counselors who would tell him what he wanted to hear [v28a, cr. 2Tim 4:3].

NEXT, they used a well known biblical story and altered it for their own purposes [v28b]. It was true that Aaron made some golden calves and said, “These be thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.” But this too was a perversion of the truth to control the people. This perversion would be easy if you kept people from reading the word for themselves and proving all things [1Thess 5:21].

THEN, he placed the two calves at biblically significant places, Bethel and Dan [v29. cf. Ge 28:19; Jg 18:29;].

AFTER THIS, he perverted the teachers of the people by replacing the authorized priests with teachers of his own choosing whom he could control, not being guided by God’s word. [cf. 3John 1:9]

LASTLY, he set up special days, again, like the feasts authorized by God with just a subtle change. “And Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like unto the feast that is in Judah, and he offered upon the altar. So did he in Bethel, sacrificing unto the calves that he had made: and he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places which he had made” [v32 cf. Lev 23:33-34; Rom 14:5-6].

It didn’t take much to convince the people especially if they didn’t take the perversions of Jeroboam and compare it to God’s word. Sound familiar? We must be careful not to repeat the mistakes of the past in allowing the subtle trickery of error to creep into the church that Jesus Himself built. Paul warned the church;

“That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive” [Eph 4:14].

WHAT IS THE GOSPEL? We find the answer in God’s word [1Cor 15:1-4], “Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ DIED for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was BURIED, and that he ROSE AGAIN the third day according to the scriptures:” (emph. seb)

The Gospel is to be obeyed [2Thess 1:8; Heb 5:9] and is obeyed when a person HEARS, BELIEVES, REPENTS, CONFESSES and is BAPTIZED [Rom 6:3-4].

The record of history is clear, men have and continue to pervert the Good News of God drawing men away from obeying the truth [Gal 5:7; cr. 2Tim 3:1-7]. Don’t be one of them.
