Why I PREACH

Recently, someone asked me why I got into preaching. I gave an answer that had two main motivations. Afterward, I got to thinking about why we preach at all. From this study I came up with 4 more reasons why we preach.

Why do we PREACH?

HEARING requires preaching. Rom 10:14) How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? Hearing is the first step in God’s plan to save mankind. There will be no “zapping” of the Holy Spirit to save us. We must Seek Him through a study of His word.

CHRIST commanded preaching. Mark 16:15) And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. Before He ascended into heaven, Christ commanded that the Gospel be preached. Who am I to go against a command of Christ?

Luke 6:46) And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?

ANGELS are looking into it. 1Pet 1:10-2) Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you: 11 Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow. 12 Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into. The gospel that was preached by the Apostles, then recorded for us in the written word, was searched out by Angels. That’s amazing to me. Yet we often don’t read it, much less to search through it diligently.

EVERYONE I know needs it. Matt 28:19; Col 1:27-28) To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory: 28 Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus: Every person needs Christ and to obey His gospel. The gospel is about the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. (cf 2Thess 1:7-8; 2Pet 3:9)

I’m REQUIRED to preach. 1Cor 9:16) For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel! Now it gets a little more personal. Since I’ve become an evangelist, one who’s main work is to preach the gospel, woe unto me if I don’t. This is what I do, spread the gospel. I’ve become that guy who needs to talk about Jesus anytime I’m in the presence of another person.

PERSONAL REASONS Luke 16:19-31) And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; 23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. The last reason, and maybe the most emotional reason, is that those that I love the most are dying OUTSIDE of Christ. They have not all obeyed the Gospel and are in jeopardy of their souls. All of us need to take this seriously. In the story of the Rich man & Lazarus, the Rich man became very evangelistic upon discovery of his fate. This motivates me to be evangelistic in life!!

This is why I PREACH the Gospel.

    1. Sure. According to the scriptures, the Gospel is…

      1Cor 15:1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.
      3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

The Gospel is the Death, Burial, and Resurrection of Jesus our Lord.

Paul would also write to the church in Thessalonica, that the Gospel is to be obeyed.

      1. Believing the Gospel is obeying God. So not sure if you mean anything else when you say the Gospel must be obeyed.

      2. Belief is connected to obedience. Consider Romans 10:16 “But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?” Do you see belief and obeyed being used together?

We’re COMMANDED to obey the Gospel. How does one obey the Death, Burial, and resurrection of Jesus?

CONSIDER our obedience by faith to water baptism, which is our own spiritual Death, Burial, and Resurrection.

Romans 6:3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:

CONSIDER also what happens in water baptism,
Colossians 2:11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:
12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.

THEREFORE, to obey the Gospel is to Believe and be baptized, (includes repent and be baptized)
Mark 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

      3. Paul said there is only one baptism (not two) He said believers are baptized by the Holy Spirit the moment they believe in Christ and His redemptive work. No water involved. The Holy Spirit is the Baptizer, not man. Water baptism was necessary in Judaism. Christendom borrowed this practiced which belonged to Israel only. We made it a tradition of the Church and few realize that it all it is. It plays no role in our salvation nor did Paul ever teach we must be water baptized. Thanks for spending the time. God bless.

      4. Have you considered what Paul taught the Ephesians when he first met them?
        Acts 19:1-6
Ac 19:1 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,
2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.
3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John’s baptism.
4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.
5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

Notice that Paul baptized them for salvation into Christ, then laid hands on them to receive the Holy Spirit.

Also notice water baptism in the preaching of Philip about Jesus.
Ac 8:35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.
36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?

If water was not a part of preaching Jesus, then why did the eunuch ask about it?

        Then, Peter said…
1Peter 3:21 The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:

May you study and consider these scriptures.

Water baptism was never “borrowed” from anyone. It’s the ONE baptism of Ephesians 4 that remains, commanded by Christ, taught by the Apostles, and preachers as revealed in the New Testament.

  1. The eunuch was a Jew. Water baptism was a Jewish rite. Priests were always about washings. I believe Paul when he said there’s only ONE baptism, the baptism of the Holy Spirit the moment we believe. No water involved. Have a blessed day!

    1. Ac 8:35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.
36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?
37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

Preach Jesus, conclude one needs water along with fully belief.

      Then Paul…
Ac 19:3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John’s baptism.
4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.
5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

Hear about Jesus, get baptized into His name by a person (must be water), then this person lays hands on them to receive the Holy Ghost.

Sounds like water baptism is necessary.

      1. Paul did not rebaptize them. Read that passage carefully .

Philip was a Jew .Jews baptized. The eunuch was a Jew. No Gentile would have been reading Isaiah. Paul was taught by the risen Christ (not by Jesus of Nazareth) and he then learned that water baptism was not for the Church. That’s why he said he was glad he had only baptized a few at the beginning of his ministry.

      2. So Paul did baptize? Glad to see we’re making headway. 1Cor 1:14-16; cf Acts 18:8.

“When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.”

As to gentiles, have you not read Acts 10?

Acts 10:47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?

Paul taught the same thing to every church. (1Cor 1:10; 14:33).

        agape,
        Spencer
