Duties of Saints, pt4. SERVE

Living the Christian Life:

In Colossians 3:1-4:6, Paul encourages Christians to live in a way that reflects their new identity in Christ. He challenges us to seek things above, focusing on heavenly things while living responsibly here on earth. The principles laid out by Paul guide our daily actions as individuals and members of one another.

These verses remind us that living as Christians involves things we can do, you and I, to embody these teachings.

1) Submit. Submission is a key theme in the Christian life, and it touches various aspects of our relationships and responsibilities. Here are several areas where Paul tells us to SUBMIT To:

a) Spouses (Colossians 3:18-19; Ephesians 5:22; 1 Peter 3:1-7)

The first place where submission begins is in the home. Wives to submit to their husbands, while husbands are to love their wives and not be harsh with them. This mutual submission creates a loving and harmonious household, reflecting Christ’s relationship with the church (Ephesians 5:22-33). If we’re married, you and I are to build marriages that mirror this sacred love and respect.

b) Unity with One Another (Ephesians 5:21; 4:1-6)

Submission doesn’t stop in the home—it extends to the church. There is mutual submission among believers out of reverence for Christ (Ephesians 5:21). Unity requires humility, patience, and bearing with one another in love (Ephesians 4:2). In a world where division often reigns, you and I can stand out as peacemakers, fostering unity and love in our relationships.

c) Children (Ephesians 6:1-2; Colossians 3:20; Matthew 15:4; Mark 7:10)

Children are instructed to obey their parents, honoring them as God has commanded (Ephesians 6:1-2; Colossians 3:20). Parents, on the other hand, should not provoke their children but nurture them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. As parents, grandparents, or caregivers, you and I have a responsibility to raise the next generation with wisdom, love, and guidance according to God’s word.

d) Masters (Ephesians 6:5; 1 Timothy 6:1; Titus 2:9; Colossians 3:22; 1 Peter 2:18)

In the workplace, Christians are to submit to their employers, working wholeheartedly as if serving the Lord (Colossians 3:22). This principle applies whether you are an employee or in a position of leadership. You and I are to treat those we work with or for with integrity and respect, always reflecting Christ in our actions.

e) In the Church (1 Peter 5:5; Hebrews 13:7, 17)

Within the church, submission to spiritual leaders is essential for maintaining order and spiritual growth. We are to respect and follow those who watch over our souls, submitting to their leadership as they guide us in our walk with Christ (Hebrews 13:7, 17). You and I can contribute to the health of the church by being humble, teachable, and respectful.

f) Territory (Romans 13:1-7)

Submission also extends to governing authorities. Paul reminds us that all authority is established by God, and as Christians, we are to be law-abiding citizens (Romans 13:1-7). Whether we agree with every decision or not, you and I are to respect authority, as long as it doesn’t conflict with God’s commands, knowing that our ultimate allegiance is to Christ.

2) Earn for Our Needs (Ephesians 4:28; 6:5; Colossians 3:22)

Work is a gift from God, and earning an honest living is part of our responsibilities as saints. Paul encourages believers to work hard, not just for themselves but so they can help those in need (Ephesians 4:28). You and I are to be diligent and faithful in our work, providing for our families and contributing to the well-being of others.

3) Relieve the Afflicted (1 Timothy 5:10; 1 Peter 4:9)

Hospitality and care for the afflicted are essential aspects of Christian love. Peter exhorts us to show hospitality without grumbling (1 Peter 4:9). Whether through financial support, emotional encouragement, or practical assistance, you and I can bring comfort to those who are suffering, offering a tangible expression of Christ’s love.

4) Visit the Widows and Orphans in Their Need (James 1:27)

True religion, according to James, is marked by care for the most vulnerable: widows and orphans. Visiting and helping them in their distress is a way to practice our faith in action (James 1:27). You and I can look for opportunities to serve those who are often overlooked, offering them hope and support in their times of need.

5) Edify the Saints (1 Timothy 1:4; Ephesians 4:12, 16, 29; 1 Thessalonians 5:11; Romans 14:19, 15:2)

Finally, Christians are to build one another up. Whether through words of encouragement, teaching, or acts of service, our goal is to strengthen the body of Christ (Ephesians 4:12). You and I can help fellow believers grow in their faith and love for God.

Conclusion

In summary, Paul’s teaching in Colossians 3:1–4:6 provides a clear path for how you and I can live as Christians. By submitting in various relationships, working diligently, caring for the afflicted, and edifying the church, we embody the character of Christ and reflect His love to the world. These are practical actions we can take every day to live out our faith and bring glory to God.

What do you want me to do for you?

(Mark 10:51a)

Do you want what’s different from the bible? You Can’t. In Mark 10:1-12, the Pharisees challenge Jesus about divorce, hoping to trap Him into contradicting Moses’ law. Jesus responds by affirming the unchanging authority of God’s Word, pointing back to the original design of marriage at the beginning of creation (Genesis 2:24). This illustrates the point: you can’t want something different from what the Bible says because God’s Word is eternal and unchanging. People often desire the convenience of twisting scripture to fit modern preferences, but God’s truth stands firm regardless of societal trends. Psalm 119:89 says, “For ever, O Lord, thy word is settled in heaven.” Galatians 1:8 warns, “But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.” The Bible is not subject to personal modification or preference. Just like in Mark 10, any attempt to change or soften the Word for comfort or convenience fails, because God’s standards do not shift with the tide.

Do you want acceptance without sacrifice? You Can’t. When the rich young ruler approached Jesus in Mark 10:17-22, he wanted the assurance of eternal life without relinquishing his wealth. He desired acceptance into the Kingdom of God without the cost of giving up what held his heart. Jesus’ response is clear: it’s not possible. True discipleship requires sacrifice. We cannot hold on to worldly attachments and still fully follow Christ, as Luke 14:33 reminds us, “So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.” Jesus didn’t just ask the rich man to part with his wealth; He asked for his full surrender. 1 Samuel 15:22 echoes this: “To obey is better than sacrifice.” There is no path to genuine acceptance by God without the willingness to sacrifice earthly treasures, desires, or comforts. Christ demands full allegiance and obedience, not half-hearted commitment.

Do you want notoriety with the Lord above your brethren? You Can’t. James and John sought glory and prestige above their fellow apostles in Mark 10:35-45. They asked for seats of honor beside Jesus in His Kingdom, not realizing that true greatness in God’s eyes comes through humble service, not self-exaltation. Jesus rebuked their request by explaining that greatness in the Kingdom of God is measured by serving others, not by claiming superior status (Mark 10:43). Philippians 2:3 teaches, “Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.” Seeking prominence for oneself contradicts Christ’s example of humility. 1 Peter 5:6 instructs, “Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time.” Notoriety is not a competition among believers; it is an outgrowth of genuine servanthood.

We must take up our cross (sacrifice our life to Christ) to be worthy to follow Him. In Mark 10:21, Jesus told the rich young man, “Go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.” This call to take up the cross means more than just bearing hardship; it’s a call to die to oneself daily, surrendering our lives entirely to Christ. Jesus made it clear in Luke 9:23, “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.” Taking up our cross is not optional—it’s the only way to be worthy of Christ. Romans 6:6 reminds us, “Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed.” To follow Jesus means we must sacrifice our desires, ambitions, and even our comfort for the sake of the gospel. It’s a life of surrender, where the only goal is to glorify God through obedience and faith.

to what shall we compare the WORD?

The Bible is filled with powerful imagery to describe the Word of God, using metaphors that reflect its dynamic and life-altering nature. From being a weapon in spiritual warfare to our daily spiritual sustenance, the scriptures portray the Word as essential for life, growth, and transformation.

1. The Word as a Weapon: Sword and Hammer

The Word of God is often depicted as a tool of immense power, capable of cutting through deception and breaking down barriers. In Ephesians 6:17, the Apostle Paul describes the Word as “the sword of the Spirit,” a crucial part of the armor of God. This sword is not just any weapon but one that can pierce deeply, exposing the truth and confronting the lies and temptations of the enemy.

Similarly, Hebrews 4:12 emphasizes that “the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword,” underscoring its ability to discern “the thoughts and intents of the heart.” This sharpness reflects the way God’s Word penetrates to the deepest levels of human existence, challenging us, revealing sin, and guiding us toward righteousness.

In Jeremiah 23:29, God says, “Is not my word like a fire? saith the Lord; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces?” The image of a hammer conveys the sheer strength of the Word, which can break through even the hardest heart, bringing about conviction, repentance, and transformation.

2. The Word as Our Daily Food: Bread, Milk, Meat, & Honey

The Bible also presents the Word of God as essential nourishment for our spiritual lives. In Matthew 4:4, Jesus declares, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” Here, the Word is compared to bread, the basic sustenance for life. Just as physical bread nourishes the body, the Word of God nourishes the soul, giving us the strength we need to grow and thrive spiritually.

For those new in their faith, the Bible compares the Word to milk. 1 Peter 2:2 encourages believers, “As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby.” Just as infants need milk to grow strong and healthy, new believers need the simple truths of the Word to mature in their faith.

As we grow, the Bible encourages us to go beyond the milk of the Word to the deeper, richer truths that are compared to meat. Hebrews 5:14 says, “Strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age.” This metaphor emphasizes that the Word is not only for the spiritual beginner but also for the mature believer seeking deeper spiritual understanding.

In Psalm 19:10, the Word of God is described as “sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.” Honey represents sweetness and pleasure, highlighting how the Word brings delight, satisfaction, and joy to those who meditate on it and apply its teachings.

3. The Word as Life-Giving Rain and Snow

The Bible uses natural cycles like rain and snow to symbolize the life-giving impact of God’s Word. In Isaiah 55:10-11, God compares His Word to rain and snow that water the earth and make it fruitful: “So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please.” Just as rain and snow nourish the ground, causing plants to grow and produce fruit, the Word of God accomplishes its purpose, bringing growth and fruitfulness to our spiritual lives.

4. The Word as Light in Darkness

Finally, the Word of God is described as light, providing guidance and clarity in a dark world. Psalm 119:105 declares, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” Without the Word, we would stumble in spiritual darkness, unable to see the right way forward. The Word reveals the truth, showing us the path of righteousness and helping us navigate life’s challenges with wisdom and discernment.

The Word of God is a powerful weapon, an essential source of nourishment, a life-giving force, and a guiding light. Its metaphors reflect its multifaceted role as it confronts, sustains, renews, and leads us closer to God. As we embrace the Word, we experience its transforming power and its ability to equip us for every good work.

Moses Chose

When we look back at Moses, we see a man standing at the crossroads of history, faith, and destiny. He didn’t just stumble into leadership or into God’s favor. No sir, he made some mighty choices—five monumental ones that shaped the course of Israel’s future. It’s worth asking ourselves: What motivated Moses to choose the harder road? What lessons can we glean from his resolve?

1. The Motivation of Moses

Acts 7:25 tells us Moses had a sense of destiny, that he “supposed his brethren would have understood how that God by his hand would deliver them.” Hebrews 11:24-25 sheds more light on this by saying, “By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter; choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season.”

Moses wasn’t motivated by the luxury and ease that the Egyptian palace offered. No, he had a fire burning within him that Pharaoh’s wealth and influence couldn’t extinguish. Moses saw his people suffering, and rather than turning a blind eye, he chose to embrace their pain as his own. There’s something noble in that, isn’t there? Like a wise man once said, “It’s not what you stand on that defines you, but what you stand for.”

2. Oppression: Choosing Affliction Over Comfort

Hebrews 11:25 continues by showing that Moses chose “to suffer affliction with the people of God.” Think about that for a moment. This man had it all—prestige, power, privilege—but he willingly stepped away from the trappings of luxury to join the oppressed. Imagine leaving behind the Egyptian courts, not because you had to, but because you chose to.

Now, that’s the kind of conviction that echoes through history. We know that when oppression knocks at the door, it’s not always convenient to answer. But Moses didn’t care about convenience. He knew his place was with God’s people, not lounging in the pleasures of the palace.

3. Stood Against Pharaoh: Not a Slave, But a Servant of the Most High

When Moses went before Pharaoh, he wasn’t some lowly slave groveling for mercy. No, he stood tall as a servant of the God Most High, with the authority of heaven behind him. Exodus 5:20-23 tells us how the elders of Israel turned against Moses after Pharaoh made their labor even harder. Imagine that! He’s trying to lead his people to freedom, and the very folks he’s trying to help turn on him. If that ain’t a leadership test, I don’t know what is.

But Moses pressed on. He knew that he wasn’t doing this for himself or for the approval of man. He was on God’s mission, and that’s a lesson for us all. When the road gets rough, and even those closest to us lose faith, we’ve got to stand firm and remember who we serve.

4. Exposed as Exodus Leader: Challenges on Every Side

Leadership exposed Moses. Exodus 14:11-14 shows the people complaining when they saw no way out as Pharaoh’s army bore down on them at the Red Sea. Then, in Exodus 15:24, they grumbled again, this time over a lack of water. And if that wasn’t enough, they complained in Exodus 16:1-3 when there was no bread.

Now, it’s easy to criticize when you’re on the sidelines, but Moses was in the thick of it. No one said leading God’s people was going to be easy. It’s like that old saying: “Everybody wants to be a leader until it’s time to make decisions.” Moses made tough decisions, and though the people grumbled, God delivered—again and again.

5. Stood With Christ

Moses’ ultimate vindication came long after his earthly life ended. Mark 9:4 tells us that Moses stood with Christ on the Mount of Transfiguration. Think about that! After all the struggles, complaints, and hardships, Moses stood in glory with the Savior of the world.

And when Moses died, God Himself buried him (Deuteronomy 34:5-6). Now, if you ask me, there’s no better way to go than to have God take care of your final resting place.

What Do You Think of His Choice Now?

Looking back, I’d say Moses made the right choice, wouldn’t you? He didn’t choose comfort, wealth, or the easy road. He chose faith, suffering, and ultimately, the eternal reward of standing with Christ. Moses showed us that it’s not the temporary pleasures of this world that define our legacy, but the eternal decisions we make in the service of God.

So, when we face our own crossroads, let’s remember Moses.

What’s LOVE got to do with it?

Love does not…

EVERYTHING!!

Love is the first & great commandment.

Paul calls love, “a more excellent way” [1Cor 12:31; 13:13].

“And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.” [Mark 12:29-31]

the culture of the day reminds me of the culture found in the book of judges; “In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.” (Judges 21:25

The best commentary on Love is found in the Scriptures. Let’s see love from four perspectives.

  1. God’s Love for us
    1. God is Love – 1Jo 4:8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. Titus 3:4-6
    2. God Gave His son – 1Jo 4:9, 10 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, John 3:16, 17; Rom 5:8; Eph 2:4,5
    3. God blesses His children – 1Jo 3:1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: Eph 1:3 every spiritual blessings
    4. Every good thing – James 1:17 – comes from above; Acts 17:28
    5. God sends sun & rain – Mt 5:45 for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.
  • Christ’s Love for us
    • Passes knowledge– Eph 3:19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.
    • As Father loved Him – Joh 15:9, 10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.
    • He gave Himself – Joh 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.; Eph 5:2; 1Joh 3:16; Rev 1:5
    • His own– Joh 13:1, 34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
    • Those who obey – Joh 14:21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
  • Man’s love for God & Christ
    • Great command– 1Jo 4:19 We love him, because he first loved us. Mark 12:28-30; Mt 22:36-40
    • Good thing for those that do – Ro 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, 1Corinthians 2:9 ings which God hath prepared for them that love him.
    • Crown of life / Kingdom – Jas 2:5 Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him? [1:12]
    • Love displayed through obedience – 1Jo 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments:
      • 2Joh 6; John 14:15, 21, 23
    • Love for truth – 2Th 2:10-12 because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
  • Man’s love for others
    • Brethren – 1Th 4:9; 1Th 3:12 And the Lord make you to increase and abound in love one toward another, and toward all men, even as we do toward you:
      • John 13:34; 15:12; 1Pe 1:22; 2:17;
      • 1Jo 2:10, 3:11, 14, 23; 4:11, 12
      • 2Pe 1:7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.
    • Husbands & Wives – Eph 5:25, 28, 33; Col 3:19; Tit 2:3,4
    • Neighbor – Ro 13:8 Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.
      • [Mr 12:31; James 2:8]
    • Enemies – Lu 6:35 But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest:
      • Mt 5:43, 44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

Plea for Pure Christianity

“And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.” (Colossians 3:17).

WE BELIEVE the Bible to be the inspired word of God, a perfect and sufficient guide (2 Timothy 3:16, 17). It does not incidentally contain some things which we teach — it is the alpha and omega of our faith and practice, and we dare not go beyond it (2 John 9).

WE COME to you with no denominational plan seeking your favor, but only in the name of Christ, desiring to help you find the truth, anxious that you obey all of God’s commandments. The obedient have a right to the tree of life and may enter in through the gates into the city (Revelation 22:14). But those who merely cry, “Lord, Lord,” shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 7:21).

WE SUBMIT to the matchless authority of Christ, heeding the faultless message that He and his inspired servants taught (Hebrews 2:3). His word produces faith, and faith in Him as the Son of God is the foundation of hope (Hebrews 11:1; John 8:24). Every person must repent, repentance being required of all and death being held forth as the wage of refusal (Acts 17:30; Luke 13:3). Confession of faith in Christ is unto salvation, and upon such a confession one may be baptized (Romans 10:10; Acts 8:37). Baptism was commanded by Christ Himself (Mark 16:16), puts one into Christ (Galatians 3:27) where all spiritual blessings abound (Ephesians 1:3), and is for the remission of our sins and the salvation of our souls (Acts 2:38; 1 Peter 3:21). Who dares refuse it? Faithfulness unto life’s end is promised a rich heavenly reward (Revelation 2:10).

WE PRAY for unity among all professed believers, for Christ so prayed (John 17:20-23). Paul besought the Corinthians to be “of the same mind” and to “speak the same things.” (1 Corinthians 1:10). Since human wisdom is the cause of (not the cure for) division, we must discard and abandon it in order to be true to any prayer for unity. A perfect and God-given platform for genuine unity is set forth in Ephesians 4:3-6. This is the basis for spiritual harmony and lasting peace with God. Consider: One God (unity in worship), one Lord, Jesus Christ (unity in authority), one Spirit (unity in life), one faith (unity in doctrine), one body, the church (unity in organization), one baptism (unity in practice), and one hope (unity in desire and expectation).

WE REFUSE to sectarianize ourselves by wearing man-made religious names; they are not only unauthorized, but actually foment division. We are to be Christians, nothing more and nothing less, being completely satisfied and humbly grateful to be honored with the privilege of wearing Christ’s name (1 Peter 4:16). God has placed His name above every name, and the disciples wore it (Philippians 2:9; Acts 11:26). The body (church) of Christ also wears His name, preferring none other, and thus the New Testament speaks of “the churches of Christ” (Romans 16:16).

WE ENDEAVOR to speak where the Bible speaks, and to be silent where it is silent. Christians have no creed but Christ, are to uphold no name but the divine, and have no plea but the gospel. We should mutually seek to establish and maintain unity in essentials, liberty in opinions, and love in all things.

WE INVITE you, most sincerely, to come and study the Bible with us – pure Christianity is wonderful! Embrace it! Be just a Christian!

Hear Him

In a world filled with a myriad of voices, opinions, and influences, it can be challenging to discern the truth. As Christians, we are to hear and follow the voice of Jesus above all others. The Bible provides the clear words of Jesus and how we should prioritize hearing Him over other voices that compete for our attention. Let’s explore why it’s essential to hear Jesus and how we can overcome the distractions that often lead us away from His teachings.

Listening to Self.
In our modern culture, self-reliance and personal wisdom are often exalted. We’re told to “trust our gut” and “follow our hearts.” However, the Bible warns against leaning on our own understanding. Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us, “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

    Imagine a ship’s captain in the middle of the ocean who ignores his navigational charts and instruments, relying solely on his instincts. Despite his confidence, he quickly becomes lost, unable to find his way through the vast and treacherous waters. In the same way, when we rely solely on our own understanding and desires, we can easily lose our way spiritually.

    Our hearts can be deceptive, leading us into paths that seem right but ultimately end in destruction. “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it” (Jeremiah 17:9)? Instead of placing our trust in ourselves, we are urged to submit to God and trust in His wisdom. When we choose to hear Jesus, we are placing our confidence in the One who knows all, sees all, and loves us all. By aligning our thoughts with His teachings, we find guidance and direction that are far beyond our limited human understanding.

    Listening to Relationships Like Family & Friends.
    Family and friends often have a significant influence on our lives. While these relationships are important, they must not take precedence over our relationship with Christ. In Matthew 10:37, Jesus makes a bold statement: “Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.”

      This scripture isn’t a call to neglect our loved ones but rather a reminder to keep Jesus as our primary focus. When we elevate the opinions, traditions, and desires of others above the teachings of Christ, we risk compromising our faith. When we prioritize the voices of our loved ones over God’s Word, we become confused and unfocused in our walk with Christ

      Our love for Jesus should surpass all other affections, ensuring that His voice is the loudest in our lives. By hearing Jesus first, we can love and serve our families better, rooted in the truth of the Gospel.

      Listening to Authority Figures Without Verification.
      We live in a world where authority figures—be they religious leaders, politicians, or cultural icons—can significantly shape our beliefs. However, it’s crucial to remember that no human authority is infallible. Acts 17:11 praises the Bereans for their diligence in verifying Paul’s teachings: “These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.”

        This passage encourages us to be discerning listeners. We should respect authority but also verify their words against the ultimate authority—the Word of God. Hearing Jesus requires us to examine everything through the lens of Scripture, ensuring that we remain grounded in truth (see 1John 4:1; 1Thess 5:21).

        Listening to Evil Spirits, Tarot Cards, Mediums, Psychics, and Astrology.
        In a quest for guidance and answers, some people turn to supernatural sources like tarot cards, mediums, psychics, and astrology. However, the Bible explicitly warns against such practices. Isaiah 8:19-20 says, “And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead? To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.”

          Imagine a traveler, seeking guidance, consults a broken compass, believing it will lead them to their destination. Instead, it leads them further into danger. When we turn to tarot cards, psychics, or astrology, we are like that traveler, misguided and led astray. These sources cannot truly communicate with us or guide us because they are not from God.

          These practices are dangerous because they open the door to deception and spiritual harm. Instead of seeking answers from these sources, we are called to seek God directly. Jesus is the ultimate source of truth, and when we hear Him, we receive the guidance and wisdom that leads to life.

          Hearing Jesus.
          Amidst all these competing voices, God’s command is clear: we must hear Jesus. In Matthew 17:5, during the Transfiguration, God the Father declares, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him!” This directive emphasizes the authority and importance of Jesus’ teachings. When we listen to Jesus, we are hearing the voice of God Himself.

            Jesus affirms this in John 14:6, where He states, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” By hearing and following Jesus, we find the true path to salvation and eternal life. His voice leads us to the Father, guiding us through the complexities of life with divine wisdom and love. We hear Jesus through the words that have been recorded for us in the New Testament. “He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day” (John 12:48; cf. John 20:30-31).

            Hearing Jesus above all others is not just a command; it is a necessity for every believer. By prioritizing His voice, we can navigate the challenges of life with clarity, purpose, and peace. Let us commit to tuning our ears to His teachings, allowing His words to shape our hearts and guide our steps.

            Stopping the mouths of LIONS

            “My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions’ mouths, that they have not hurt me.” (Daniel 6:22a).

            In the book of Daniel, we find a powerful metaphor for the trials and challenges that believers face in their spiritual journey. When Daniel was cast into the lion’s den, he faced a den of fierce, hungry lions, yet he emerged unscathed because of his unwavering faith in God. Today, we face different kinds of lions—threats that may not have sharp teeth or roar, but still seek to destroy us spiritually. Using Daniel’s story as a foundation, let us examine the lions we encounter in this life.

            The Roaring Lion.
            The Apostle Peter warned us of a fierce predator who constantly stalks us: “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour” (1 Peter 5:8). This roaring lion represents Satan, who seeks to devour souls by pulling us away from God. Though Satan has been bound and limited in power by Christ’s victory on the cross, his influence continues through false teachings and deception. As Paul wrote, “Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light” (2 Corinthians 11:15, KJV). To resist this roaring lion, we are called to “submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4:7).

            The Lion of Idolatry.
            One of the lions that seeks to devour us today is the lion of idolatry. Paul warned the Colossians to “mortify… covetousness, which is idolatry” (Colossians 3:5). Idolatry is not merely the worship of carved images or false gods; it is also the elevation of anything in our lives above God. Whether it be money, fame, power, or even ourselves, anything that takes the place of God in our hearts becomes an idol. We must guard our hearts against this lion, ensuring that God remains first and foremost in all we do.

            The Lion of Oppression.
            Living a faithful Christian life often brings us face-to-face with the lion of oppression. Paul told Timothy, “Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution” (2 Timothy 3:12). Oppression can take many forms, from direct persecution for our faith to more subtle societal pressures that tempt us to compromise our beliefs. Today, we must be prepared to endure trials and trust that God will deliver us.

            The Lion of Nationalism.
            Another lion that seeks to devour our faith is the lion of naturalism—trusting in earthly solutions and human institutions rather than in God. The role of government is ordained by God, and we are called to submit to it, as Paul explained in Romans 13:1-7. The lion of naturalism deceives us into believing that the solutions to life’s problems are found purely in this world, but as Christians, our hope is in the eternal promises of God. As Paul reminds us, “If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable” (1 Corinthians 15:19).

            The Lion of Sin.
            Finally, perhaps the most dangerous lion we face is the lion of sin. James wrote, “Every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death” (James 1:14-15). Sin crouches at the door, waiting to devour us, and often it begins with the smallest temptation. Like a lion stalking its prey, sin often sneaks up on us gradually, catching us in moments of weakness. The key to overcoming this lion is to stay alert and grounded in God’s Word.

            Is Once Saved Always Saved true?

            Can A Christian Sin And Be Lost?

            Several of the world’s denominations teach that Christians cannot sin so as to become lost; that is, there is no way that a true convert of Christ he cannot go to hell may sin, and thereby, receive eternal damnation – he cannot go to hell after having once been saved. This is popularly spoken of as the doctrine of “once saved, always saved”.

            On one extreme, this doctrine is expressed as, “True Christians will not sin as they lack the desire and the capability to sin, because their allegiance to Christ has changed their nature”. At its other extreme, this doctrine is expressed as, “No matter how grievous, the sins of Christians will not be held against them in the final judgement”. Those who hold this last view believe that Christians can do wrong, but they also believe that Christ will forgive them of any, and every, sin so that they will be blameless on the day of judgement.

            You researched this question to find, not what man teaches, but what the Bible teaches about the possibility of Christians falling from the way of truth, and becoming lost.

            The most clear treatment of this subject in the New Testament is found in the second chapter of II Peter. Study this entire chapter carefully. I quote now verses 20 and 21, which best summarize its teachings,

            Unquestionably the people spoken of here were once Christians, for the writer speaks of them as those who had, “(quote) escaped from the pollution of the world through the knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ” (unquote). Unquestionably these same people were, again, entangled in worldly pollution, that is, they had fallen from the way of the truth, and had (again) become sinners. Also, unquestionably they are subject to condemnation for these sins, for the verse says that their final state is worse than their initial state, that is, they are worse off than before they were saved. Thus, the doctrine of “once saved, always saved”, is not supported by the scriptures, for the Bible here shows that Christians can sin, and that they may receive punishment for those deeds.

            All verses of the Bible agree with all other verses when the subject is the same, and when the rule, or law of God, is the same. Also, when the rule, or law, is consistent, clear verses serve to explain less clear verses about the same subject. Said in a different way, the Bible never contradicts itself, and the Bible is its own best interpreter. Remember, God cannot lie, and God is not the author of confusion. Study Hebrews 6:18, and I Corinthians 14:33. To illustrate this, we can study verses about baptism (for instance) in the New Testament books written by the apostles John, Paul, and James, and expect agreement. But, we cannot necessarily expect agreement between the Old Testament writings of Moses and the New Testament writings of Paul concerning (say) worship; Moses’ laws were in effect until Jesus’ death ended them. See Col. 2:14. Paul’s writings, however, are a part of the will of Christ, His New Testament. The New Testament is our guide today.

            In I John 3:9, we read, “Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God“. If this verse teaches, “once saved, always saved”, it is contrary to II Peter 2:20 and 21 (which we read previously). Thus, a contradiction is forced into the scriptures which cannot exist. However, apparent conflict disappears when we see that the writer is stating the obvious fact that Christians cannot sin and remain faithful followers of the Lord. This is verified by the very same writer in the very same letter where the apostle, John, in I John 1:8-10 says, “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us“.

            Here, again, we find an inspired writer telling true believers, Christians (including himself) that they can sin, and that they can do unrighteousness. More deeply, John is here instructing Christians how they can find forgiveness for their sins; Christians are to confess their sins and they will be forgiven them. This instruction is not for sinners who have never become Christians. Christians are citizens of God’s kingdom, and must abide by its rules. People who are not citizens in the kingdom must first become so before its laws apply to them. We suggest that you find how to become a citizen of God’s kingdom through study the message, “What Must I Do To Be Saved?” and “Are We Saved By Faith Only?”.

            Belief in, “once saved, always saved” may seem justified by John 10:27-29, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand“. If this scripture proves, “once saved, always saved”, the scriptures contradict each other, and this, of course, is an impossibility. To harmonize the scriptures (to make them agree, one with another), we must notice that Jesus did not say that his sheep could not leave of their own accord; He said that no man could pluck them away.

            Each Christian may leave Christ, if he chooses; but unless the individual wishes to go, no one else can make him leave. Notice in verse 27, Jesus said that His sheep, “know me and follow me“, and thus, following, and continuing to follow the Savior is a condition that we must fulfill if the promise, “neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand” is to be kept.

            And so, in addition to those things necessary to become saved (namely, believing the word of God, believing that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, repenting of (or changing away from) a sinful life, and being baptized into Christ for the remission of sins, we have an additional requirement, that of being faithful unto death (Revelation 2:10).

            “Once saved, always saved” is a dangerous doctrine: The Christian who does fall away (upon seeing his sinful life) may conclude that he was never saved and become doubtful of the power of God; another may live a sinful life, and become lost, while believing that God is unmindful of the sins being committed. Either way can result in eternal death for the sinner’s soul, and it would be such a useless death, for (as we have seen), the doctrine of “once saved, always saved” is wrong. The Christian who sins must confess those sins to God, who will forgive them.
